Hard Mode

Most bosses and every raid can be switched to Hard Mode from the prompt that opens when you tap them in the combat picker. The switch is per boss (and per raid), stays on until you turn it off, and shows as a HARD tag wherever that fight is listed.

A hard fight doubles the boss's offence — twice the max hit, twice the accuracy. Its health and its defences are untouched, so it dies to the same hits in the same time it always did; the only thing that changes is how much damage it does to you along the way. In exchange every drop rate on its table doubles — a 1-in-500 unique becomes 1-in-250. Guaranteed drops stay one drop, and a boss you skip with credits costs double the credits.

If you die in Hard Mode you lose every tradeable item you are carrying and every tradeable item you are wearing, permanently. Untradeables — Infernal Cape, quest gear, skill capes, anything you could never buy back — stay with you. Your bank is untouched, so the counter-play is to take in less than you can afford to lose. This applies to solo fights, group fights, raid parties and idle catch-up alike: a hard fight left running while you are away costs the same pack. Turning Hard Mode on asks you to confirm it first.

Difficulty belongs to the fight, not to you: a group boss room or a raid party is opened at the difficulty the player who opened it chose, everyone in it fights the same boss, and joining a listed group means taking that group's difficulty. Hard Mode applies to solo fights and group fights; open-world boss lairs are always normal.
